Good afternoon, good morning, good evening. This is episode number five of Off the Court. I am your host, Philip Paul. Whatever you want to call me. Just don't be rude about it. Either way, we're gonna talk sport as we do. And this week has kicked off preseason in the NFL. Some games that I'll highlight on, some that I kinda kept an eye on. Uh Giants, uh Chiefs. Who else I got here? The Cowgirls, Broncos. Um, who else? Who else? Who else? Seahawks. And a little, little, little bit of the WBPL. Women's WPBL. Women's Pro Baseball League. Trying to get those initials situated so I can remember. Um, so yeah, we're we're talking about the NFL. We're gonna start with this is preseason, we're gonna start with Tua. Does everybody remember Tank for Tua? How he was just gonna be this great player that everybody wanted, and teams lost bad to try to get him. I believe at one point the Raiders were going to uh tank to get him. And eventually he ended up going to the Dolphins. Now, at the time, Dolphins weren't bad, though don't hold it against me. I can't remember if um if Cheetah was with them when Tua got there, or was it after the fact? And even still, you have perhaps the fastest runner in the league at the time. And ye failed. And not so much. It's like the offensive line didn't want to block for him, at least that's how it looks, because man, he had more concussions than he's had a lot of concussions, and Jackson Dart, who we'll talk about later, he seems to be going down that same path. But yeah, tank for two was a thing, and now it's not. He's on his second team, that being the Atlanta Falcons, and his debut, if you will, for the preseason was horrible. Two throws, twenty two, no, no, I'm sorry, three for five throws, and twenty-two yards total. That was bad. He on the first snap fumbled the ball. They say thankfully he recovered it, right? Woohoo. You've been in the league long enough that you shouldn't be making these mistakes. He's gotten enough concussions as it is, so something as small as fumbling the ball can cause him to get hit. Fumbling the ball on a snap is crazy. It doesn't happen a lot, so you kinda gotta put that on the sensor a little bit, but you gotta be able to catch that. You know, that's that's how the game starts.

SPEAKER_01

But either way, you had the Broncos the Broncos.

SPEAKER_00

You had the Broncos, yes, it was the Broncos. Broncos in the Pockets. Uh, Sutton was all over the place. He was he was getting busy. Um the other thing I saw was uh Jared Stidham. Is it Jared or Jared? Jared Stidham. Stiddy Stids, whatever. You know, he was a joke after a while. It was a ha ha uh when he was with the Patriots. People such as uh Skip Bayliss, even if I have the team wrong, I know I don't have this wrong. Skip Bayliss talks so much about this guy, not saying that he was great, not saying that he was horrible, but it was more of a who is this guy type thing. And he wasn't prepared to play under someone like a Tom Brady. But look how great he's doing. Look how great he looked during the preseason here. Um first game of the preseason. It's just, you know, first game for some teams. Oh, it's just preseason, but this is where you get to see where some of these new guys are at. This is where you get to see where some of the guys are at that get no love, such as uh Justin Fields, who uh did pretty good for the Chiefs in this game, though the Chiefs lost. Hold on, I want to be right. Yeah, Chiefs lost 20 to 12. Um, but that's what the preseason's for. The preseason is to see how these guys do, and to a he's not showing those um flashes of brilliance that maybe some people may have seen. Maybe tanking for tour was a bad idea. I think it was. But at this point, let him go through the motions and see what happens when it really matters. And then after that, let's let's then we'll have our judgment. But the Falcons did not do good against uh the team they were playing against. They did bad, the Broncos. So they got whooped. Um Giants and Vikings. Giants are my team. I love the Giants, always will love the Giants. Secondary team is the Tennessee Titans, for sure. They did horrible last year. I don't even want to talk about that. Cam Ward's not who Cam Ward seems to have been, as they thought. But we're talking about the Giants versus the Vikings. Giants, no. Singletary looked good, as he should. 40-yard run, getting busy. Malachi Fields, what a nice catch for the touchdown. Uh, got him from Notre Dame. Nice pickup. Um, OBJ, he hits the field, and the fans were excited, you know, they cheered and stuff like that. And, you know, hey, welcome back. You know, welcome home, Odell, for sure. From me to you. Welcome home, Odell. That's where you belong. He played everywhere else and it just didn't work. He played for the Rams, it didn't work. He played for um, I looked, did he play for the Chiefs? I can't remember. Uh, he was all over the place. He played for um the Browns as well. He was all over the place, man. So hopefully now Odell Beckham is home and home to stay. Retire with the big blue. Again, Singletary, he did his thing, he did good, and he was he was running the ball pretty well. Uh Malachi, like I said, with the catch.

SPEAKER_01

The Giants lose. 13-10. By the third quarter, Dart got hit. Or sacked about three three to four times. Three to four times. Again.

SPEAKER_00

Not again, but this could be uh a thing about his political beliefs or whatever he had going on during the offseason. You know, that does happen. Oh, we don't like who you support, and we don't like what you said, and they won't block for him, which I think is stupid. We if I'm making millions, I'm making my millions to play football and not worry about what somebody else thinks or what somebody else believes. That has nothing to do with me. You gotta protect the man, you gotta protect your quarterback because it's coming from him. The plays are coming from the coach, yes, but the quarterback has to execute. And if you don't block for him, bad things happen. He went down with that first hit in the first quarter, the end of the first quarter. He was down for a few minutes. So they took him to the back. Concussion protocol. This guy gets more concussion protocols than flags get thrown when Dallas is playing.

SPEAKER_01

We'll get to them too, because they suck.

SPEAKER_00

Sorry, Dallas fans, sorry, Cowboys fans. They're not good. You won this game, that's great, but no. But Giants seemed okay from what I saw. Um, like I said, the rookie, he's doing pretty okay from this one uh sample size. Uh Jameis Winston uh got some plays, but he got sacked. Um eventually the Giants definitely got one. But when it was all said and done, now is it? Giants lost. Wasn't a lot of flashes in some of these games. There were some good catches. Uh, like Price when he caught the ball. Um, what do I have here? He caught the ball. Mm-mm-mm. Wow, I don't even see it, but Price, he caught the ball four minutes left. Nice little one-hand catch. And it ended up being 13-10. That ended the game. There were some picks that Jackson Dart threw. I think he threw about two of them. If that was him, because the keeping up with the quarterbacks were rough for me yesterday. But uh Dart, he definitely threw some interceptions, got sacked three to four times, just it wasn't great. Then the last, in the third quarter, uh not third good third quarter, 14.8 left. He throws another pick. He throws his third pick. That being Jackson Dart. And like I said, the preseason, it's not, you know, it's not something to worry about. But in the grand scheme of things for a coach, it is. I'm not a coach, but I could see, like, oh, this is what we're doing. Nah, we can't do this. What's the point of practicing? Maybe they have it in the mindset, these teams, these coaches, oh, this is just preseason. We're gonna see how this goes, and then we'll really play. You know, one year, I would like all sports, all teams to play like they want to win. Because that's what you what that's what you're not gonna see. You're not gonna see all teams play like they want to win. These people get drafted, they get paid these millions, and they don't make this money, or these teams, these owners don't give away this money for you to just lose. They expect something from you. So how much more, how much fun sports would be if everybody played. If everybody played to their fullest potential, you'd see some real competition and you'd see some people who, you know, oh, these are the best players in the world. And you might see somebody that was better, that's better than Curry. You might see somebody that's definitely better than LeBron James. You might see somebody better than Kawhi. Right now, you're seeing a lot of people who play more than Kawhi, but that's neither here nor there. But yeah, these guys get paid a lot of money to just not do what they're expected to do.

SPEAKER_01

Either way, Giants lose 13-10. Sutton.

SPEAKER_00

I talked about Sutton and Stidham. That's the Broncos and the Falcons. Falcons lost, Stidham did his thing. Score ended up being 27-7. 3 for 22. 3-3-3 up five for 22 yards as a quarterback. Embarrassing. He even said, you know, there's no he being two or said there's no excuse for the way he played. And it is, here and you suck. You're not, you're not proving how good you're supposed to be. You're not proving that you were worth all that talk. So the truth comes out. Justin Fields. Uh, like I said, he looked good for the Chiefs. Seemed like the team gelled with him in the sense of he didn't look like he had to run around out there like a chicken with his head cut off, like he did with the Jets. But the other thing with the Jets, if I want to compare things, when he was coming off the bench for the Jets, it wasn't bad. I don't I don't know how bench play really would work for the NFL. I see how it works for basketball, clear as dang. But football, how would that work, right? These guys get a whole lot more uh winded than in basketball. You know, this one in basketball, you're just chasing down to uh block at times, or you're running down the court to put the ball in the basket. These football players are running to keep somebody from tackling them. So with this offensive line at the time, Justin Fields looked pretty good. Pretty good. Um, I can't recall if Mahomes played, but that quarterback, I wrote his name down. I heard two different names. Uh Ned and Nesmeyer. Nedmeyer. Um he threw a nice little touchdown to Jason Bradley. Nice uh nice, he threw a nice long one to Jason Bradley, and he dropped it. And there was no reason for him to drop that badge because it was in his hands. It was right there. It was hands, stomach, it was just right there. They tried to see if the uh defense, you know, pass interference or something like that, but there wasn't no pass interference. You dropped that ball. Simple as that. And that's uh Cheeps.

SPEAKER_01

Cheeps versus Rams. That game ended 20-12.

SPEAKER_00

Those are the few games that I looked at. They weren't like super duper exciting games before I get done. Uh Dallas. Dallas played. And Dallas are the ones who played against the Seahawks. Definitely was some good defense on both ends uh from what I saw. Bad punt by Dallas. The punt recovery. Excuse me, not a bad punt by Dallas. Good punt by the Seahawks. Bad recovery by the Dallas Cowgirls. And I'm a Giants fan, so you know Giants don't, Giants and Cowboys don't get along. So, yeah. Um that punt recovery was was crazy. Um they, to me, this is uh Giants or Giants. This is Cowboys Super Bowl, right? You already know. They they would the Cowboys fans, even though it's preseason, they're probably saying, oh man, this was our Super Bowl. If this was a Super Bowl, we would have beat them. Like, no, because they're the champs. That's what the Cowboys do. Cowboys do it. Um I can't say Chiefs fans are there yet, because Chiefs are still a talked-about team. Who what other teams do it? Um, I wonder if Pittsburgh teams do it. I don't know, but yeah, Dallas Cowboys fans, they're definitely out there saying, oh man, if this was Super Bowl, we would have won. This was our Super Bowl, we beat the Champs. Okay, good for you. Um, but they definitely had some stuff or players that being the Cowboys. I think they had two players that were playing well. I don't know their names off top because one of them definitely is a rookie. Um, so we'll see how their season turns out. They won that game 17 to 3. 17 to 7. 17 to 7. Um score might have changed at the time, but I don't rem not at the time, but I don't remember it. Last I checked, it was 17 to 7. So um that's where we're at. Cowgirls, good job for your preseason game.

SPEAKER_01

We'll see if you guys could do that during the season. That's my little bit of uh football that I've seen.

SPEAKER_00

We're gonna go over to um, let me see, do I wanna do we'll mention real quick the women's pro baseball league. They had three games that happened this weekend, or yesterday, or part of today. And uh you had the LA Queens versus the Boston Hunters, and the San Francisco uh Firebells versus the New York Hype. So the LA Queens and the Boston Hunters, in the beginning, it seemed like they were going to have a slug fest. Excuse me, at least that's what I saw. And when it was all said and done, LA Queens said, nah. And they came back with some uh uh what do they call doubles? Um bases not even loaded. There was one more player left to get to the base, and then it would have been bases loaded. So it was just two people on base, one person on the mount or at bat, and bang, they hit the home run. It goes, it goes, it goes, it's gone. And before you know it, the score just got out of the hand. It was zero, three, then it was three, three, and then it was 13 to 3. Game over. Um, the way it looked, as far as uh presentation-wise, for those who haven't seen it, respectfully, right now it looks like just it looks like high school softball. That's what it's looking like. But again, they just started four teams. I mean, you can't, what do you, what are you really expecting? You can't expect too much. Uh, they are, I think, about 10 games into this season. So they got about 20 more games left, if I'm correct. As a matter of fact, let's see how many games it has to be. I'm actually looking it up right now as we speak.

SPEAKER_01

Um, we're looking at Hold on one second. My audio listeners.

SPEAKER_00

Yep, thirty regular season games for the entire four team league. Regular season will be followed by a postseason playoffs featuring a three game series and a five game championship series. Fifteen games per team.

SPEAKER_01

So why are they doing thirty? Well, we shall see. That's fifteen hold on.

SPEAKER_00

Each team in the WPBO will play fifteen regular season games. Totaling thirty regular season games. The entire four team league. Am I bugging? Is my math that bad? Can I not read? Okay, either way, it's 30 games. Three for the uh semifinal and five for the final. Don't see regular season between the first and the sixth, between the first of August and the 6th of September. And then on the 9th, they'll be doing the semifinal game, and then whenever that ends, they'll be uh doing their main championship to crown. Their first champion, which will be oh, all games take place at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois. So that's a little bit of the uh women's pro baseball league. Also, Kelsey Whitmore of the uh I forget what they're called. Uh Kelsey Whitmore of the San Francisco Fireballs uh had a nice little three-run score at the top of the fifth. It was nine and three. Ended up being 11-6, Kelsey Whitmore with the three-run uh home run. Um the uniforms, simple enough. Definitely the New York Heights or the New York Heights, their uniform looks very uh New York Yankee-ish. So I'm looking to see a lot of the teams kind of drift towards the more MLB look. But it's gonna be a while. I mean, you got four teams now hope and pray that, you know, they add more by the next season. Uh, this is a good test to see where they will go. Hopefully they have a run like um the WNBA or the W, whatever you want to call it. Man, the WNBA just talking about them like, oh man, they're going through it right now. But we'll see um what happens with that. On another note, sports talk, huh? Let's see, we got oh yeah, let's talk about this. Uh I saw this on Yahoo Sports. It was something on the Warriors, possibly trading one of their champions. And that being, which I fully expect that to happen, right? Um, Draymond Green. So this one says, Oh no, I want to get it right. Uh change could be coming to Golden State in the next few years. Steph Curry and Jeff Steph Curry and Green both approaching. Hold on, I want to make sure I'm reading this right. Yeah, okay, I am reading, right? It looks weird how they did that. Uh, change could be coming to Golden State in the next few years with Steph Curry and Green, that being Draymond, both approaching the latter stages of their careers. The Athletics, Marcus Thompson, believes the Warriors could eventually trade Green or allow him to leave in free agency next summer. They should have just let him leave now. If you're willing to let him go next summer, you should have just let him go now and save yourselves that money instead of re-signing him. Great, he wanted to help the team out and give you guys some funds to put in LeBron's pocket for his contract, but it didn't happen. And you should have just moved on from Draymond. And soon you're gonna have to move on from Steph, but we'll see what happens. Uh it's probably six months left for the Draymond Green era, Thompson said. He's won, he's a one-year deal, 27.8 million, and that's why I say they should have let him go. You're gonna pay him all this money for him to be gone soon. Where does he go? I don't know, knowing him the way he plays, or how he is. I believe he's a clutch sports client, too, if I'm correct. Um, so I wouldn't be too shocked to see him go to the Lakers, the uh Sixers, if that's what he wanted to. But he has a 27.8 million and doesn't have a no trade clause. So that's a very tradable contract. It felt like this has been coming for a while, but the but what the what? That's crazy. It felt like this has been coming for a while, but this, the way Warriors GM Dunleavy was talking. And the way they positioned it, this feels like, all right, let's see where we are in February, because if we're not where we need to be, then we're just going to start selling pieces off and starting over. What else do we have? Yeah, so it just looks like they brought back everyone. Um, they made minimal to almost non-existent moves during the drafts. Um they signed some free agents. Uh they're gonna be an interesting looking team. They have Steph, Draymond, Porzingis, Pods. Damn. Oh, Jimmy Butler. I want to say they re-signed or brought back Gary Payton the second. He was an exciting player for them when he uh his first stint with them. I think this is his second or third, possibly, with the Warriors. So it'll be interesting to see what happens with that. I'm I'm not following the the Wizards. I was gonna say the Lakers again. Jeez. I'm not following the Wizards like that, but it's something to keep an eye on. You know, let's see what happens if the dynasty is finally broken apart, right? Because all that's left is Steph and um Draymond. I mean, Jordan Poole probably would still be there, but we all know how that turned out. So, sorry, Pool. There's no pool party. So, yeah, there is that. And Draymond's probably just gonna retire if he can't play for a team on a that's a championship team. I mean, I couldn't blame him. I said on my last episode that he's either old, getting old, or whatever, because he looks like it. So he might just take his podcast and do his thing. So we'll see how that goes. Um, we're still looking at this whole Kawhi situation with Pablo Torre, still talking about it. It's like his hot topic, his hot button topic that he just can't let go of. And it's getting him some views. So that's understandable. You know, you gotta do what makes your money, do what makes you what gets you paid. So it's still an issue with the Kawhi situation and then a slow burn on this Laker sale situation. But that's it for this episode. Thank you for watching. Subscribe to my YouTube channel off the court show. Also, coming soon will be my Shopify page that will be attached to this show. And I will have a little shop of 3D prints and other ideas that um I have. So I'll be doing things such as keychains and fidgest, bookmarks and things of that nature, some really good things. I'll be posting some pictures soon. Probably try to take this month, not even probably the next two months, to kind of build it up. Or I might be quick about it and just start putting stuff up there, depending on how smooth the transition goes to putting up this uh web store. And I'll keep you all posted on that. But until next time, I will see y'all again. Good morning, good afternoon, good night. I am your host, Philip Paul. I'm out.
